St Andrews University Debating Society is at its heart a student society, but this would not be possible without building an active and meaningful relationship with the town community.
Schools Debate Mentoring Scheme:
We work with several schools across the North-East of Fife, Primary and Secondary, helping schools run their Debating Clubs and coaching School Students of all levels of interest from the competitive to the general interest. We appoint two coaches from our ranks to go into schools throughout the year as well providing additional materials and help with the more technical aspects of debating.
The long-term goal of this scheme is get new schools to the upper parts of the competitive circuit and in the short-term to open access to the skills that debating teaches to those who would benefit but might not get the opportunity. Debating is an excellent way to become informed about issues in the world and also how to express opinions and arguments relating to those issues, building people intellectual and personal confidence. We teach how to build arguments and speeches, how to respond to arguments as well as developing ways of building knowledge and awareness of the world.
St Andrew’s Schools Debate Competition:
2019's competition will be held on Saturday 16th November and will be one of the largest in Scotland. We are also delighted to be returning to our traditional home in the Student Association after its extensive renovation.
