The Board of Ten is the committee that organise and run the Union Debating Society's various endeavours throughout the year. Elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) each spring, all members contribue to a specific facet of the running of the society and is dedicated to the continued success of the society as a whole. Every member is always happy to answer any questions that you might have or to provide further information about the society and/or its various positions, so please do not hesitate to contact them if questions arise.
I'm a title
The Convener is the president of the Board and Debates Officer on the Student Services Council of the Student’s Union. They are responsible for the general oversight of the society and chairing board meetings. They also chair formal debates in Lower Parliament Hall and are responsible for organising and obtaining top quality speakers.
Our current president is Toni Valencia, a third year reading Economics and International Relations.
Zaine Victor Mansuralli
The Serjeant-at-Arms sits to the Convenor’s right during formal debates and is charged with their safety and well-being. They are ably equipped for this, armed with the Union Debating Society’s sword, Bessie. They are also responsible for alumni relations, the weekly order papers, and the society’s clothing orders.
Our current Serjeant is Mac Cheminais.
The Internal Secretary is responsible for assisting the organisation of Lower Parliament Hall debates and organising our two internal competitions, Cubs in Semester One and the Internal Pro-Am in Semester Two.
Our current speaker secretaries are Zaine Mansuralli, a third year reading History, and Viren Beruwalage, a third year reading Economics and Maths.
The Communications Secretary is responsible for publicising the events and the activities of the society across the student community. This includes website maintenance, and responsibility for the social media channels of the society and the creation and distribution of posters.
Our current Communications Secretary is Brooke Siegler, a third year reading International Relations and History
The Clerk is responsible for the minutes of both board and Public Debates. They type and submit these minutes to be recorded in our uninterrupted minute book stretching back to the founding of the society in 1794, which is available for inspection.

Lucas de Carvalho
The Treasurer is responsible for handling the society’s accounts, overseeing finances and managing sponsorship of the society.
Our current Treasurer is Ruth Batten, a magistrand reading Philosophy.
The Steward is responsible for the social life of the society. They plan numerous events and dinners throughout the year and serve port before Public Debates each week.
Our current Steward is Lucius Reibel
The Inter-Varsity Secretary is responsible for organising speakers and judges to represent St Andrews at competitions across the country and the world. They also represent the society to the Scottish Students' Debating Council and they convene the annual St Andrews Open.
Our current IV Secretary is Lucas de Carvalho
The Chief Whips are responsible for running training sessions on Wednesday afternoons and Monday evenings as a means of bettering our competitive teams as well as gaining interest among new debaters.
Our current Chief Whips are Malcolm Risk and Anna-Ruth Cockerham.
The Schools Secretaries co-ordinate the Schools Debate Mentoring Scheme, organise judges to go to external schools competitions and convene St Andrew’s Schools Debating Competition.

FATHER OF THE HOUSE
The Parents of the House are appointed by the Union-elected President and act as symbols of the “spirit” of the house. The position is awarded to someone who has greatly served the Union Debating Society in the past.
