As a matriculated student of the University of St Andrews,
you are automatically a member of the Union Debating
Society which enables you to attend any and all of our events
free of charge.
As one of St Andrews' most multi-faceted Union sub-committees,
there are many ways that you can choose to get involved with the
Firstly, you can get involved with debate itself, in which case we
recommend that you come along to our Wednesday training sessions
that are held from 2-5 pm in the Large Rehearsal room on the top
floor of the Union. These are held the same time each week and are
open to students of all experience levels. So whether you're a debates
novice or veteran, make sure you come along as debating is a fantastic
way to improve your confidence as a speaker even if you do not wish
to debate competitively.
If you do wish to compete competitively, than endeavor to attend
training as frequently as you can and express your competitive interest to our Chief Whips, Malcolm Risk and
Anna-Ruth Cockerham, who can invite you along to our advanced trainings. TheUDS have previously won the Cambridge IV and got to the semi-finals of Chennai Worlds. We even won the European University Debating Championships in 2015! Competitive debate is a great way to meet new people from across the UK (and beyond) as well as to hone your debating skills.
You can also get involved with our Public Debates, which are held each week in the grandiose Lower Parliament Hall. At the end of each debate, the debate gets opened up to the floor and you are able to make floor speeches sharing your thoughts/feelings about the debate with the house. In subsequent weeks, there's also the opportunity to speak in the debate if you so wish, making our Public Debates another excellent way to get involved with the UDS.
Schools Outreach Programme
We also have an excellent Schools Outreach Programme, where we send our debaters to help teach students in the St Andrews community how to debate. Additionally, we host a Schools Competition in the Martinmas Term, which we are always looking for help with! If you're interested in schools, than please get in touch with Aidan Johnson and Jacob Robterts , our Schools Secretaries. Their e-mail is: firstname.lastname@example.org.
